The Nazis referred to Camp Vught as a “Konzentrationslager”(pronounced /Con-sen-tra-tsyowns-laa-ghur/), which literally means “concentration camp.” About 32,000 “Undesirables” like Mies Boissevain, her husband, and son were put in this “re-education center.”

While Camp Vught was the only SS-run camp in the Netherlands, initially it was not as bad as the infamous death camps the inmates were transported to later.

When Mies Boissevain arrived at Camp Vught, she enjoyed seeing the rural environment. Soon she realized that Vught was perhaps not as bad as the rumored death camps, but the moat, guard towers with sharpshooters, and the ovens suggested worse was to come.
