Both Jakubek Hirschfeld straight from his little shtetl on the Ukrainian-Polish border as well as Kairos Keizer leaving war-ravaged Europe behind, were in awe of the Statue of Liberty. Lady Liberty and all that she embodied was yet another “Muse” that inspired the men.

Johns Hopkins –then & now
Unknown Artist / Photographer

In the prologue and epilogue, the husband of Kairos’ granddaughter works at Johns Hopkins. In addition, Johns Hopkins played a pivotal role in Kairos Keizer’s own life; it was here his Student World Organization led him. Kairos was elated to leave war-ravaged Europe and his ex-fiancée behind to come to Johns Hopkins, the prestigious private research university and hospital located in Baltimore, Maryland.

Not only did it launch various medical specialties, such as endocrinology, urology, and pediatrics, but it also established most of the medical protocols that are still used in hospitals all over the world today. Just to name a few, CPR, dialysis, defibrillators, and surgical gloves were invented and first used at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Fact or Fiction: Anything about Kairos’ medical endeavors is true. He did meet famous specialists at Johns Hopkins who would change the direction of his life.
